🧠Jazz bets on multispecific antibodies in GI cancers
Jazz Pharmaceuticals is teaming with AbCellera in a deal worth more than $2.4 billion to discover multispecific T-cell engaging antibodies for gastrointestinal cancers and other solid tumours, with AbCellera leading the first 2 programmes and committing to a third within a year. The partnership gives Jazz exclusive worldwide options on each candidate and could pay AbCellera up to $792 million per programme, plus royalties, as Jazz expands its GI oncology pipeline beyond zanidatamab.
Why It Matters To Oncology
Multispecific antibodies are a major drug discovery focus because they can combine CD3 binding, costimulatory signalling and tumour targeting to redirect T cells against hard-to-treat solid tumours.
GI cancers remain a high-need area where T-cell engagers have shown promise but still face challenges including efficacy, selectivity and tolerability in the solid tumour microenvironment.
For clinicians, this signals continued industry investment in next-generation immune engagers that may eventually broaden options for patients with malignant neoplasm of the GI tract and other solid tumours.
The Financials
AbCellera gets $56 million upfront for the first 2 programmes, with another $28 million due when the third programme starts.
The headline value exceeds $2.4 billion, driven largely by downstream option fees and development, regulatory and commercial milestones.
If Jazz advances candidates, AbCellera could receive up to $792 million per programme, plus tiered royalties in the mid-single to low-double digits.
What They're Saying
Jazz oncology CSO Josh Allen said the collaboration aligns with the company’s rare disease strategy while expanding its focus on GI cancers and building on existing oncology expertise.
The companies are positioning AbCellera’s discovery platform as a way to generate T-cell engagers for tumour types that have been difficult to crack with conventional approaches.
The move also reinforces Jazz’s intent to build around GI oncology following the 2024 accelerated FDA approval of zanidatamab in previously treated biliary tract cancer.
What's Next
AbCellera will run discovery and early preclinical work on the initial 2 T-cell engager programmes and is slated to initiate a third within 12 months.
Jazz can opt into clinical development and global commercialisation for each candidate, and the alliance could expand by up to 2 additional programmes.
Separately, Jazz is awaiting an FDA decision by Aug. 25 on zanidatamab in first-line gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma after the drug beat trastuzumab in a Phase III study last year.
